Are you ready for the first day of school?

Important Back to School Information

The first day of school is August 30 for Grades K through 12 and September 4 or 5 for Preschool. Are you ready? Are you looking forward to meeting your teachers? Have you finished your summer reading? Do you have all of your school supplies? Here is some important information to help you prepare.

What’s New for 2017-18?

PowerSchool Now Available In All Grade Levels:

The Windham School District is delighted to now offer the PowerSchool Parent Portal at every grade level. PowerSchool streamlines communications and will help keep students and parents informed of upcoming assignments, grades, classroom activities and other important information. Content availability will depend on individual grade level. During the individual Grade K through 8 open house events, parents will be introduced to the portal and it will be made available for parents to access. Instructions for setting up new parent accounts as well as user Access ID and Access passwords were provided within the recent InfoSnap registration verification, however, these will be resent as we get closer to open house events. Windham High School students and parents will be able to access PowerSchool Portal and class as of the first day of school.

1:1 Technology:

We are delighted to announce that beginning this year, each student in the district will be equipped with 1:1 technology. We will be distributing MacBook Airs to all high school students; Chromebooks to every student entering grades 2-8 and iPad resources to kindergarten and grade 1 students. With 1:1 technology, the Windham School District is able to provide a 21st century learning environment and effectively integrate technology into curriculum and instruction to improve student learning, increase learning opportunities, and encourage the use of different and innovative teaching methods.

Ready Set Go:

Studies have found that adding more recess time improves academic performance. This year, we are pleased to introduce Ready Set Go where we will add additional recess time at Golden Brook School and Windham Center School. Children will spend this time on the playground, weather permitting. The additional recess time can be found below:

Kindergarten and Grade 2, Golden Brook School : 8:20 to 8:40 am

Grade 1, Golden Brook School:  8:40 to 9 am

Windham Center School: 8:15 to 8:35 am

GO (Get Organized) Binders:

In order to get students’ organized and improve effective functioning skills as well as communications, we are introducing the new GO Binder for Golden Brook School and Windham Center School students. Students are required to take their GO Binders back and forth from school. The binders feature district and classroom schedules, teacher contact information, homework folder, parent/communication folder, schoolwide information and learning resources.

Emergency Messages and Attendance Calls

Parents/Legal Guardians are automatically enrolled based on the information provided for both the Mother/Legal Guardian and Father/Legal Guardian.  The home phone number that has been provided is designated as a required number for Emergency and Attendance Calls.  Cell phone numbers may also have been entered as the primary home number.  Cell phone and email options will also be utilized, but you will have the option at a later designate preferences or to opt-in to receive text messages.

Global Leadership Summit:

We are enlisting Grade 9, 10 and 11 students to spend next summer getting their blarney on and putting on their leinenhose in order to help influence the role of technology, while also earning college credit. Featuring nearly 3,000 high school students from around the world and held in Dublin and Berlin, the Global Leadership Summit is a global movement and combines an educational tour with a two-day leadership conference. Participants will begin their trip visiting Dublin and discover why technology giants are flocking to Dublin, while also taking time to explore Celtic life and the city’s landmarks. Students will then travel to Berlin where they will spend time visiting Europe’s emerging great tech hub before participating in the leadership conference. During the two-day conference, students will hear from world-renowned keynote speakers, work with local and global experts, and collaborate with peers in small international teams. The teams will develop a technological prototype and the winning design will be displayed in the Nobel Peace Prize Museum. As a result of this experience, students will learn the design thinking process to develop their own solutions focusing on the Influence of Technology on Society and be inspired to take action back home. Space is limited and is handled on a first come, first serve basis. The deadline for signups is November 1. Interested students should contact the guidance department for more details.
