2017-18 Bus Routes and Information

2017-18 Bus Routes and Information
bus safetyBus routes and information for the 2017-18 school year are now available. Please note that these schedules are tentative and you should refer back to the school district's website for updates. If you have any questions, please contact the bus company at bus@windhamsd.org. Also, as we begin the new school year, it is a good time to remind everyone of some important bus safety tips.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), riding in a school bus is the safest way for children to travel to and from school. School buses and drivers must adhere to numerous safety standards above and beyond other vehicles on the road. The Windham School District encourages children to take the bus. If a child will not be participating in the bus transportation program, we ask that parents notify the district at the earliest convenience in order that we can plan and adjust routes accordingly. Parents should also let the office know via note or phone call if their child’s after school transportation is going to be different than usual and be aware that each school has a specific cut-off time for early dismissal as outlined in student handbooks in order to not interfere with buses.

Also, as we begin the school year, we want to remind students, parents and drivers of some school bus safety tips to ensure everyone’s safety.

For Students:

  • Do not wait at the bus stop alone and wait away from traffic and the street.

  • Do not get on the bus until the driver says it is safe to do so.

  • Notify the driver is you drop something while getting on or off and do not try to pick it up.

  • Use the handrails when getting on and off the bus.

  • Once on the school bus, go directly to your seat and sit down, facing the front of the bus. Respect the bus driver and fellow passengers and follow the rules while riding the bus.

  • When exiting the bus, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away. Look around for cars before walking away or crossing the street. Do not walk behind or bus or cross in front of the bus without making eye contact with the driver.

For Drivers:

  • Be alert so kids don’t get hurt. Watch out for children at all times and slow down.

  • Yellow flashing lights on a school bus indicate a bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Drivers should slow down and prepare to stop.

  • Red flashing lights indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. Drivers must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again. It is illegal to pass a school bus whose red lights are on.
